Elective Policy

  1. Residents must do a total of four core electives to be chosen from Infectious Disease/Immunology/Rheumatology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Genetics, Hematology/Oncology or Pulmonary/Allergy.
  2. Residents must do three additional blocks of electives which may consist of single or combinations of electives from those listed above as well as from the following list: Pediatric Anesthesiology, Child Psychiatry, Pediatric Dermatology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Pediatric Radiology or Pediatric Surgery.
  3. Residents must be PL2 level or above to rotate with other departments. Individual approval must be obtained from other departments prior to the rotation starting.
  4. After the seven blocks of electives have been scheduled to be completed, a resident may decide to take one of the following electives:
    1. Research (must be approved by Program Director and Chief Residents, see course description)
    2. Plastics, Neurosurgery, Pediatric CT Surgery
    3. Pediatric Pathology
    4. *Transition to Practice
    5. Procedures (must be approved by Program Director and Chief Residents, see course description)
    6. *Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine
    7. Breastfeeding Medicine

    * Resident must arrange with appropriate attending approval.

  5. Electives should be scheduled at least 30 days prior to the start of the elective.
  6. Outside/Away electives – obtain written documentation of the rotation dates, goals and objectives for your elective, plan for taking call, and schedule from the preceptor at the outside institution. Fill out an “External Short Term Hospital” form on this site, have it signed by your sponsors, and give it to the Pediatric Education Office.
